Selling Gold in Maine
Known as the Pine Tree State, Maine has a rich and interesting history. The state was fought over bitterly during both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Its current borders were not officially agreed upon until the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842. Maine was once part of the state of Massachusetts, but became an independent state in 1820 as part of the Missouri Compromise. While Maine has never has one of its citizens become President, several notable politicians have hailed from its borders. Former Secretary of Defense William Cohen served under Bill Clinton. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, the states current Senators, are quite powerful and known for their moderate views. Maine is a well known tourist destination for urban dwellers on the East Coast looking to get away from it all. A total of 1.3 million permanent residents call it home today.
