The second youngest state of the country, Alaska was admitted to the American Union on January 3, 1959 and it became the 49th state of the country. The Pacific and Arctic Ocean surround Alaska because of which, the climatic conditions of the state are extremely cold. Alaska had remained a secluded place in the American history. Even today, the population density of the state is very less, as compared to other American states. In the early 1890s, the state became known to the miners and industrialists because of the Gold Rushes that started in different parts of the state. Yukon gold rush was a major movement in the history of the state. Today, coal and petroleum mining are the major industries of the state. The second most popular industry in the state is adventure sports. Even biologists and naturalists visit the state to study presence of life in extreme temperature conditions.
